Tyres & Your Safety

Tyres are one of the most important safety related features on your vehicle. This page is designed to make you aware of some of the more important points to observe.

The tyre should not have less than 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the breath of the tyre and around the entire circumference. The tyres must be free from cuts and bulges, and inflated to the correct pressure.

Because of the vagaries of the UK tyre law, a legal tyre may not be a safe tyre, and tyres that have just passed an MOT test are not necessarily safe or in sound condition.

Each illegal tyre risks a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points on your driving licence. Some EU tyre laws are more strict than in the UK so you need to be mindful of this when driving abroad.

A road vehicle's insurance can be invalidated if it is proven that a vehicle's tyres are knowingly of an unserviceable or illegal condition.

Tyres must be correctly inflated; it is a legal requirement to run your tyres at the correct pressure. Low tyre pressures will reduce road grip, increase tyre wear and raise fuel consumption.

Tyre Pressures should be checked regularly, we offer a free inspection and inflation service.
